"Our task must be to free ourselves...by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures
and the whole of nature and its beauty."

It's not a virus and it's not a bacterium, but it is responsible for the deaths of millions of animals annually. This disease does not discriminate. It strikes dogs and cats, kittens and puppies, pure breeds and mix-breeds.... it is pet overpopulation, and it is the biggest problem facing animal shelters today. - Responsible Pet Ownership: Pet Overpopulation (animed.org)

A Dog Sits Waiting

A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun; too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.
He's been there for days now, with nothing to do, but sit by the road, waiting for you.
He can't understand why you left him that day; he thought you and he were stopping to play.
He's sure you'll come back and that's why he stays. How long will he suffer? How many days?
His legs have grown weak, his throat parched and dry. He's sick now from hunger and falls with a sigh.
He lays his head down, he closes his eyes. I wish you could see how a waiting dog dies.

Misc Information

  • Hurricane Preparedness Information:  If you live in an evacuation zone, the best plan for your pets is to contact a friend outside the area and take your pets there as soon as you hear a hurricane watch announced. Leaving pets to face the storm alone in your home or apartment is the worst plan, but you may have no choice.   NEVER leave pets alone in a mobile home. They will likely die.
  • Non-Evacuation Zones: Even though your pets will be at home with you, they will still become very nervous and hyper when the winds do hit.  If you have a pet crate or carrier they will do better in there as long as the family is present.  If you are taking a direct hit and you evacuate to a bathroom or inside closet - take the pet with you and keep the leash ON.

    Pet Friendly Shelters:
  • Miami-Dade - There are two pet-friendly shelters for people in evacuation zones or unsafe structures (such as mobile homes). Families MUST stay with their pets in the shelters. People are urged to pre-register their pets and there are already several hundred pre-registered at this time. Applications, information and requirements are available on-line at www.miamidade.gov
  • Broward - There is only one pet-friendly shelter and it is administered by the Broward Humane Society. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Check out the requirements at:
    http://www.humanebroward.com/education/hurricane.htm#PFS
  • Palm Beach County - Palm beach also has a Pet-friendly shelter with about the same requirements as the others. Check it out :
